Our History

From Window on the Orient to a Canberra institution.

Stephen Ng's passion for memorable dining traces back to part-time restaurant work through high school and university. In 1984, alongside Danny Yip and Josiah Li, he co-founded Window on the Orient — refined traditional Hong Kong cuisine, whole steamed fish, live lobsters — the first in a series of restaurants that introduced fusion Chinese dishes previously unseen in Canberra.

In 1987 the trio established China Tea Club in North Lyneham, followed by Madam Yip in Dickson in 1990 — transformed by 1992 into the acclaimed Chairman & Yip on Bunda Street. For over three decades, both Chairman & Yip and China Tea Club have been beloved icons of the Canberra dining scene, renowned for exceptional cuisine and an unwavering commitment to quality.
